Dunbar Rock -- Guanaja, Honduras: Feb 14-21,
2026 |
|
Guanaja
or Pine Island as named by Christopher Columbus, is the most undiscovered
and pristine of the three islands off the coast of Honduras that make up the
archipelago called The Bay Islands. Guanaja is the eastern-most of the Bay
Islands off of Honduras. It is situated about 18 miles east of Roatan and 30
miles north of the mainland of Honduras. |
|
A
visit to Dunbar Rock offers a unique dive vacation experience from start to
finish. As you can well imagine from viewing the picture on your left, the
“getting-here” is your first introduction to what sets it apart, literally
and figuratively.
Getting to Guanaja does take a bit of effort, but
this is what helps keep it so pristine. Once you arrive, it takes no time to
realize you are somewhere off the beaten track. Guests arriving at the
Roatan Airport transfer to the 52' Catamaran yacht, Wave Galaxy Ferry for
the ride from Roatan to Guanaja. Time to sit back and relax and enjoy the
scenery. Before you know it, the ferry arrives at the boat landing at
Bonacca Cay, Guanaja. Since the main mode of transportation in Guanaja is
via boat, watching the small outboards arriving to pick up family and
friends also makes for a very interesting cultural experience. The staff
from Dunbar Rock will be waiting for you at the bottom of the gangplank
there to meet and greet, collect your luggage and take you on the 5-minute
boat ride to the Island.
Perched on a cay with 360° views of Sandy
Bay, Guanaja and surrounding cays, this unique resort blends beauty,
serenity and something unidentifiably special in a laid-back, inviting
atmosphere. The 15,000 square foot property is spread across 4 floors. The
ground level provides access to a private white sand beach for lounging,
swimming and snorkeling and their PADI/SSI dive center just off the docks. |
|
A set of wide stairs leads to a roomy terrace before passing a landing area
with a central courtyard and gift shop, then on to the 2 main levels which
house rooms and common areas. Most guests tend to spend their time on the
Villa’s fourth-level, which includes the Great Room with a flat screen
TV/living area and inside dining room. This is also the location of the
infinity pool and pool bar, a favorite location for happy hour and to watch
the sun set. |
|
Their
onsite PADI/SSI dive center operates 2 custom dive boats: the 45’
Freedom and 40’ Endeavor. Each have capacity for up to 20 divers. The
boats have wide platforms for giant stride entries and sturdy ladders
for exiting the water. They are provisioned with drinking water, fruit
for snacking, fresh water showers, towels, camera rinse tanks, dry
storage, shaded areas and all required safety equipment.
Boat
rides vary from 20 – 30 minutes for dives along the south to up to 45
minutes for dives along the northern coast. Boats generally depart at
8:30 am for the morning 2-tank dive, returning for lunch with the
afternoon boat leaving a reasonable time after lunch has concluded.
The friendly and professional staff pride themselves on not just
being your guides but your dive concierges, so please plan on leaving
the lifting, hauling and packing of all the diving gear to them! Their
team will carry your gear onto the boats, prepare it for the dive,
change it over for the second dive, and rinse and store it at the end of
the day. Your only assignment while on board is to do a check to make
sure you have all your gear before we depart, then sit back and enjoy
the ride. |
|
There are 50+ named Guanaja dive sites,
another 6 or so “kept secret” by the Dunbar Rock dive staff for their
guests only. More dive sites are being discovered every day along the
barrier reef off Guanaja and around the numerous surrounding cays. |
