The
“Enchanted Islands” of Galapagos are found in the Pacific Ocean 600
miles west of Ecuador. Made famous by the studies of Charles Darwin that
became his “Theory of Evolution,” the volcanic islands of Galapagos have
been declared a National Park of Ecuador and the second largest Marine
Reserve in the world, with many wonders to discover, both on land and
underwater. The Galapagos Islands National Park features an amazing
diversity of indigenous animals, many endemic, which are unusually tame
due to lack of predation and many years of protection. This protection
must continue to preserve the uniqueness of Galapagos for future
generations. |
|
The
incredible biodiversity of the Galapagos makes it a world-class diving
destination, often considered the best dive location on the planet.
Year-round, divers experience the magic of schooling hammerheads, penguins,
endemic marine iguanas, Galapagos sharks, large pods of dolphins, thick
schools of skipjack and yellowfin tuna, bigeye jacks, mobula rays, silky
sharks, white and blacktip sharks, and sea lions galore. You’ll also
encounter chevron barracuda, snappers, rainbow runners, and wahoo.
In
addition, the region boasts a variety of smaller fish, including creole
wrasses, parrotfish, scrawled filefish, Pacific boxfish, and tiger snake
eels. Regular sightings of mola mola (oceanic sunfish), seahorses, bullhead
sharks, red-lipped batfish, various shrimp, and many other marine
invertebrates further enhance the experience.

Galapagos Sky is a 100ft (33m), 16 passenger luxury liveaboard yacht custom
designed and built for the purpose of scuba diving in the Galapagos Islands.
Onboard, each cabin is designed to offer a perfect blend of relaxation and
elegance. Spacious rooms feature plush bedding, en-suite bathrooms and air
conditioning. The main salon features an audio/video entertainment center
and a separate dining area. Experience a delightful blend of Ecuadorian and
international cuisine by the onboard Chefs and team. They prioritize
locally-sourced ingredients and sustainably farmed produce whenever
possible, ensuring every meal is fresh and eco-friendly. Breakfast and lunch
are served buffet-style, while dinner is a fine plated experience with
orders taken in the morning. Snacks are available throughout the day,
including chips, crackers, and cookies at the bar. The top deck is home to
loungers for relaxing in between dives or star-gazing. |
|
Diving
in the Galapagos offers an exhilarating experience but requires advanced
skills due to strong currents, variable visibility, and cooler water
temperatures. Expect temperatures to range from the low 60s to the upper 70s
Fahrenheit, depending on the itinerary location and the season. Dive depths
typically range from 20 to 30 meters (65 to 100 feet).
To ensure a
safe and enjoyable dive, divers should be comfortable with these conditions
and possess excellent buoyancy control. Proficiency in performing negative
(sometimes rapid) back-roll entries and descents from small boats is also
essential.
Galapagos Sky recommends divers have between 50 and 100
open water dives, experience with strong currents, the ability to remove
gear in the water, and the skill to board small boats in choppy seas. Nitrox
certification prior to the cruise is highly recommended, and recent dive
experience is required. |
