JW Fishers Metal Detectors

For over thirty years JW Fishers has specialized in the design and manufacture of reasonably priced, high tech underwater search equipment. The product line includes diver-held and boat-towed metal detectors, marine magnetometers, underwater camera systems, ROVs, and side scan sonar.

The company was founded in the mid-sixties by current president and CEO Jack Fisher. It all started when Mr. Fisher, an avid diver, needed an underwater metal detector to use on a salvage project. Finding there was no such product available for recreational divers, over several years he developed and built his own underwater metal detector. JW Fishers Mfg. was formed and Mr. Fisher began offering his detectors for sale to other recreational divers. As a result of customer requests for a line of commercial quality detectors, the company designed and built more powerful models that could cover larger areas.

The claim-to-fame of these pulse induction detectors is their ability to ignore minerals in the environment while maintaining high sensitivity to all metal targets. They are not affected by highly mineralized salt water, coral, rocks with a high iron content, or magnetic (black) sand; all of which drive conventional metal detectors crazy. Detects all metals from coins and jewelry, to anchors and cannons. The diver is alerted to presence of a metal target by both visual readout (shown on the meter) and an audio output (heard in the underwater earphone). The detection range for a target is unaffected by the medium between the detector's coil and the metal object. Performance does not vary whether detecting through air, water, silt, sand, or solid coral.

Powered by an internal 9 volt rechargeable battery pack, the detector will easily run all day on a full charge. Recharge the battery overnight, and it's ready for another full day of hunting.

SAR-1

JW Fishers SAR-1 was specifically designed for military, law enforcement and public safety dive teams to locate metallic objects in low visibility environments. The "snareless" SAR-1 has a streamlined design with no external wires or cables which makes this detector the ideal tool for work in environments with potential entanglement hazards.

	The SAR-1 has both visual (ten ultra bright LEDs) and sensory (vibration) target indicators. When the detector approaches a metal object the handle begins to vibrate and a few of the LEDS illuminate. As the bright yellow search coil gets closer to the target, the vibration becomes more rapid and more of the high intensity red LEDs light up. The number of LEDs that illuminate is helpful determining the size and burial depth of the target. Small targets may only illuminate 2 or 3 LEDs whereas larger targets will light up the complete display. The SAR-1 works equally well in fresh or salt water, and detects a variety of targets including shell casings, handguns, rifles, shotguns, knives, UXO, mines, and any type of explosive device containing metal. The unit will also detect large targets (such as automobile or aluminum boat) up to 6 feet. This high performance Pulse Induction metal detector detects both ferrous and nonferrous metal objects, while ignoring minerals in the environment. The detector will not give false signals from salt water, coral, high iron rocks, or other ground mineralization, as some other types of detectors do. As with all JWF detectors, the detection range is not affected by the material between the search coil and the metal target. Whether detecting through air, water, silt, sand, mud, or rock, the detection range remains the same. The SAR-1 detector is constructed of corrosion proof materials and comes with AC and DC battery chargers, and a carry bag. Rechargeable batteries power the detector for 12 hours before requiring an overnight recharge. Batteries can be easily field replaced to allow around the clock operation. Unlike some other detectors, the electronics compartment can be opened for inspection or battery replacement without voiding the warranty.

Underwater connector on coil wire:
The "underwater connector on coil wire" option allows the standard 7.5" coil to be detached from the detector's electronics housing so any of the optional coils can be attached. The optional coils greatly increase the versatility and enhance the capabilities of these detectors. One detector with a few different coils can do the work of two or three different detectors. The Pulse 8X can be used on land, dive to 200 foot depths, or deployed from a boat.

5" Coil:
The 5 inch coil is the smallest coil that can be used on both the land handle and diver handle. This coil was specifically designed for nugget hunting and for other very small targets in streams and lakes. It works equally well for land hunting. The coil is well suited for detecting targets lodged between rocks or crevices in reefs.

10" Coil:
The 10 inch coil has a detection envelope that extends to almost three feet on either side of the coil and six feet below the coil. This coil's detection envelope is slightly larger than the standard 7.5 inch coil which comes on all Pulse 8X detectors. The larger detection pattern allows an area to be searched more quickly with fewer sweeps of the coil. The 10 inch coil will detect larger targets at slightly deeper depths than the 7.5 inch coil but, is not quite as sensitive to the smaller targets such as rings and other jewelry items.

16" coil and short diver-held handle:
The 16 inch coil is the largest coil that can be attached to a handle. The 16" coil has a detection envelope that extends more than three feet to either side of the coil and seven feet below the coil. This coil has excellent sensitivity to larger targets and is ideal for locating cannons, gold bars, anchors, pipelines and outboard motors. The 16 inch coil is in use by commercial diving companies worldwide for locating and track pipelines.

18" coil and 100' cable for boat deployment:
The 18 inch coil with 100 foot cable is designed for boat deployment. The coil is lowered to the bottom, raised a few feet above the bottom, and trolled along at slow speed. The detection envelope extends 5 feet to either side of the coil and seven feet below it. This coil is ideally suited for covering small search areas when looking for outboard motors, anchors, cannons and other large targets laying on the river, lake or ocean floor. Used by numerous law enforcement agencies for weapons recovery operations and to locate vehicles dumped into rivers and quarries.

8"x48" coil and 100' cable and skids for towing:
The 8 by 48 inch coil has the largest detection area of all the optional coils. For a large target, such as several cannons or a ship's boiler, the detection envelope extends four feet to either side of the coil (12 foot total width) and 8 feet below the coil. The coil is mounted on four small skis for dragging along the beach or in shallow water. This coil is ideally suited for locating buried targets because it travels just inches away from the bottom. The unique oval design gives this coil both good sensitivity to small targets (rings, coins, etc.) and deep detection of larger targets. The 8 by 48 coil has been used by treasure hunters worldwide for locating coins and jewelry along beaches as well as gold and silver bars at wreck sites.

Probe coil (1" diameter x 22" long):
The 22 inch hand probe has a 1 inch coil molded into the end of the probe. This coil has a small but very concentrated detection envelope that extends several inches around the probe tip. The probe is ideally suited for detecting targets lodged between rocks or crevices in reefs. The probe also works well for detecting pockets of coins on wreck sites where larger coils may react to the many large metal objects surrounding the coins. The probe can also be inserted into soft muddy bottoms to pinpoint targets.

Dual underwater earphones:
A single underwater earphone is included with every Pulse 8X detector. The single underwater earphone slips under the mask strap or into the diver's hood. Dual headset is available for underwater use that provides a separate earphone for each ear with a connecting headband. The dual underwater headset is much louder than the single earphone.

Extra battery pack:
An extra 9 volt NiCad battery pack can be field installed in 8X detectors at any time. Unlike many other underwater detectors on the market today, Fishers detectors can be disassembled without damage to the detector or voiding the warranty.
